11- LEGEND OF NEVETSECNUAC - EVIL PERSONIFIED - SECTION 25

11- LEGEND OF NEVETSECNUAC - EVIL PERSONIFIED - SECTION 25

Qarzten Caimund thoughtfully sipped his tea, collecting his thoughts, before again resuming with (briefing and) his   frank disclosures.

Lenny gradually had learned then, how Guangweit’s Sovereign after readily agreeing to lateral alliance, had additionally supplied arms and men to the dissident leaders. Furthermore, through adroit machinations, the pirates had been united under the flagship of the Chieftain Stokor Yinner.

01- CHIEFTAIN STOKOR YINNER (1)

Even Lenny Sukzor had heard of the notorious exploits of this, inscrutable Chieftain. He quietly nodded, understanding well, the reasons why, this most effective leader, infamous (notorious) for his overt, rapacious character, his bellicose, invincible martial ferocity had been singled out for this endeavor by the Guangweit’s Sovereign Arvid Mazdean. The enigmatic, ferocious Chieftain Stokor Yinner, who was also well-versed in stratagem, was the only one capable of uniting such predatory, raucous groups of brigands and Indigenous buccaneers under one flagship.

But then, a proponent of strong discipline Stokor in an unprecedented move had forced a curtailment on five fundamental practices (habits) of the pirates' ill-gotten ways:  such as debauchery, sodomy or rape, liberal inebriation, gluttony (avidity) and willful devastation. In contrast to the local government's harsh, oppressive measures, the pirates had become by then relatively more liberal, righteous, and lenient; even with their kidnapped beings (living cargo) temporarily detained for a lucrative ransom.

Under Chieftain Stokor’s rule, there were also other positive changes; for instance, they no longer callously destroyed or disabled merchant ships, or willfully murdered or maimed the crew and passengers. In most cases the merchant ships had been taken whole (intact) and put back into service after the plunder; with this fascia (frontage), they steadily gained more vessels. The able-bodied crew or passengers at the time of capture were always given a choice of life over death and, in most cases whether forcefully or persuasively, recruited to swell their ranks; in this way each conquest simply fortified and augmented (enlarged) the pirates' flotilla (armada, fleet). Invincible at every confrontation with the provincial law-enforcement's forces/vessels, Chieftain Stokor Yinner had also exploited psychological warfare; for instance, a widely circulated adages, had fostered the propaganda belief that, part of the loot on at least three or four occasions had covertly gone to the destitute regions and to the oppressed families to, alleviate the government-imposed pain and suffering. Because of this sort tactics, the Provincial Government, and its forces, hence, had been fighting a losing battle.

02- QARZTEN CAMUND (19)

Qarzten Caimund, through his vast network of spies had of course learned of these dangerous developments in Subai Province well before Zakehertan had assigned him to deal with this matter. In fact, Qarzten had earlier broached the subject with His Highness Zakhertan, soon as he had learned of the rising power of Chieftain Stokor Yinner; and more importantly, when he had affirmed Stokor’s moral rectitude and courage, strongly advocating prompt action to thwart the impending peril (threat).

Zakhertan Yozdek’s slight bemused grimace followed by a stony glare had been an important clue that had awakened Qarzten Caimund to the possibility that His Highness had been well apprised of these facts long before but that his mind had been set on something more specific.

Qarzten presently sipping his tea, ruminated further, how at first, he had not comprehended (grasp) the true reasons behind the purposeful postponement (delay) in the punitive action against Subain Province and, more specifically, on Guangweit Nation. It had become much clearer to him brief time later when other factors came into play; and now, he was compliantly instructing Lenny Sukzor on the finer points, but only in part, of the initial steps to that elaborate ploy.

Qarzten Caimund had furthermore been furtively apprised of the privy information  that, after the elimination of the other potential candidates, Lenny Sukzor, surreptitiously for some time now, had been groomed for the position of Prime Minister by His Highness Zakhertan Yozdek; the rival candidates, irrespective of their long-time service, salient (noteworthy) competence and stanch loyalty, within the short timeframe of last six months, had one by one been ruthlessly discarded, demoted, or  altogether eradicated (disposed) by the Black Band Guard Regiment. It was imperative therefore that Lenny Sukzor fared remarkably well in this aslant (sideways) assignment in Subain Province.

As Qarzten Caimund had quietly pondered on this concern, on the outset he had patiently listened to Lenny Sukzor’s justified reservations and then, dispensed his apt instructions along with well-intentioned advice to ensure latter’s success.

Lenny Sukzor having noted all that, he subsequently thanked Qarzten Caimund for his trouble and then took his leave of Qarzten. Lenny went straight home to set his affairs in order and to pack; for he was to embark on this (relatively) dangerous mission the following morning.

03- LENNY SUKZOR(119) jp

~

It so happened that while all this trial business was going on in Channing, Brigadier General Norz Kan utilizing his untapped skills and after a surprise offensive, had brought the dire situation in Tanghui Province under control.

The dread of incurring Sovereign Zakhertan Yozdek’s displeasure being the greatest motivation, Norz Kan had done this without any intervention or reinforcement from the Capital. The political situation having been ratified, the new Military Governor Ruobje Yoner not needing Qarzten Camund’s help, had left two days prior, with his personal entourage and small military contingent under the command of Captain Tizan, to assume his post in Tanghui Province.

Qarzten Caimund, now that his immediate duties in Channing had been discharged, was instead ordered to go to Bacaun Province where he was to oversee and resolve more pressing (grave) situation that could not be so easily rectified by any other. For this reason, the following morning Qarzten Caimund had also departed Channing on this profoundly serious government business, discreetly and, with the elite contingent of Zakhertan Yozdek’ invincible militia the Black Band Guard Regiment. The direction he took was opposite to that of Lenny Sukzor.

Part of Qarzten's orders had entailed, to first disband the ethnic tribes presently congregated under one rule and then quell the insurgency in Bacaun Province before it too became a serious threat to national security. But more importantly, Qarzten was to capture the enigmatic leader Danzek Zhadog Borym alive and then once incarcerated, in an iron cage and in chains, and under heavy guard, arrange Danzek’s safe transport, back to the Capital to stand trial on the charge of treason. As a deterrent, it was imperative that Danzek Zhadog Borym, be made an example of.

04-CHIEFTAIN DANZEK ZHADOG BORYM  (61)JP

Qarztan was secretly ambivalent about this assignment, for he had once, while in his teens had been rescued from the jaws of death by Danzek Zhadog Borym and he had lived amongst the tribe till he completely convalesced (recuperated) from his extensive injuries; during which time, he’d deeply fallen in love with Danzek’s beautiful sister Beatrice, a warrior princess of that tribe.

05-- BEATRICE BORYM  (25) HIS SISTER - JP

Alas, she’d already been promised in marriage, in childhood, to another powerful tribe’s crown prince, as means to cement (bolster, strengthen) a lasting alliance.

So much had happened since that time; and Qarztan was not the same naïve, romantic boy he’d once been, yet soon as Qarztan had learned of this assignment, flood of memories long buried, had resurfaced to again pain (exasperate, nettle) his soul. It had taken all his might (willpower), to appear normal and to conceal (hide, mask) this grave secret from Sovereign Zakhertan.

In truth Qarztan did not rightly know how he would handle this hidden, conflicting dilemma which the assignment entailed (caused, involved); part of him still loved his (sworn) blood-oath brother Danzek Zhadog Borym, despite the fact they had parted ways as lasting, cantankerous (belligerent, pugnacious) archenemies (foes, nemeses).

Qarztan, at this point had pensively looked down as he clenched his jaw; he’d so terribly missed his sworn brother! After a spell, Qarztan, however, vehemently shook his head to dispel all the ruminating (cogitating,) fond memories of exciting, exhilarating scenarios that had rushed to parade mercilessly, in front of his mind’s eye.

The corners of his mouth, nevertheless, slightly lifted in smile (smirk) thinking of their rumbunctious ways, two teenagers sneaking into taverns, to guzzle beer and stare at the voluptuous town’s women or waitresses serving drinks to the warriors. A deep sigh escaped Qarztan’s lips as he thought of Danzek’s innate (inherent) beauty: Oh, Danzek had such striking, penetrating eyes, one could simply get lost in those liquid pools of brilliant green-glowing stars!

Qarztan was perpetually, even now (to date), remained quite envious of those orbs (eyeballs), and Danzek’s raven (black) locks of braids (manes, tresses, curls, strands) cascading down his broad athletic shoulders, his flawless skin, full lips, chiselled features and chin. Undeniably, his sworn brother Danzek had a breathtakingly beautiful face and noble countenance (visage).

06- DANZEK ZHADOG BRYM (19) JP. WOWW

Danzek, with his rather strikingly handsome attributes, naturally got all the attention, but Qarztan did not mind it at all, for secretly he too was captivated (obsessed), infatuated even, by this very fetching young warrior, though he would never act on it. Besides, his heart was already besotted (love-struck, quite smitten) by Beatrice.

Qarztan, purposefully directed his musings (cogitation) back on the assignment:

The Bacaun Province, besides being strategically important because of its natural defenses and its proximity to Korion, was particularly vital also since a good portion of the gold mines were situated there. Unfortunately, the area was populated overall by widely diversified, fiercely independent, recalcitrant mountain tribes that had to be at a great expense and effort subdued (bludgeoned) into obedience and subjugation. Their strong stamina and exceptional abilities to work under grueling, most perilous conditions in the mines were what had saved them thus far from the extinction that had befallen five other (indigenous) minority groups in Wenjenkun. The Military Governor, Shunget Honen, being tireless in his efforts, after the initiated severe measures that had culminated in a mass execution of the ringleaders, had obtained for a period at least, a lasting stability in this otherwise troublesome region. The ensuing years of increased productivity and the resulting economic prosperity/boom, akin the situation in Subain Province, had inevitably lulled many government officials into a false sense of security, except for one, Qarzten Caimund.

Right from the start certain (seemingly) innocuous events had alerted Qarzten to the portended dangers, though he’d kept this to himself. It had, expectantly, centered on one individual: a fearless leader born into the Turkeon tribe, one of the fiercest, ethnic tribes existing in the remotest mountainous region of Bacaun Province, his secret sworn brother Danzek Zhadog Borym. Qarzten, could not help but wonder, how Danzek must look now, after all he’d gone through.

07- QARZTEN CAMUND (9)

After Qarzten and Danzek had parted ways, of about a decade prior, while still in his rebellious, mid-teen years, Danzek, had volunteered to be an archer/scout in Wenjenkun Cavalry and then distinguished himself, in the eyes of the Wenjenkun’s Illustrious general Kenso and the defense minister Harken, by his rendering of heroic, invaluable service during the difficult Neobe campaign against the Shirenzo Nation. Danzek, single handily and under disguise, had then lured the detestable Sovereign of Shirenzo, His Highness Amur Xgaro, into a trap, causing his inevitable downfall. After the annexation of Shirenzo into a vassal state, Danzek had been handsomely rewarded and was in addition given support, enabling him therefore to achieve his goal a year later, when the death of the Turkeon tribal chieftain (his father) precipitated a power struggle between the three able contenders (princes, siblings from different mothers) all vying for the same position.

The new Turkeon chieftain Danzek had continued to act subserviently and accepted State honors from Wenjenkun for his subsequent, meritorious deeds. Certain irregularities in his convictions, minuscule/minute aversions and inconsistencies in his actions however, overlooked by other officials in Wenjenkun’s government, had nevertheless, alerted keen observant Qarzten Caimund to Danzek Zhadog Borym’s ulterior motives. Unfortunately, the bond of blood-oath brotherhood was still strong and it superseded national security; it had tugged at the loyalty cords (threads, loyalty twines) of his heart and, Qarzten had thus constrained, checked (held back) his staunch (steadfast)onus, his duty (to his office), to raise an alarm and timely warn Sovereign Zakhertan, or the members of the council (legislature, parliament) of the impending (looming) danger from Danzek.

Besides which, back then having not yet attained his present powerful position and, as a minor official, Qarzten’s petitions in Court would have been rendered fruitless, if not blocked by the (implanted moles) staunch supporters of Danzek Zhadog Borym.

Furthermore, in absence of concrete incriminating proof- for Danzek had been extremely proficient in covering up his tracks with all his clandestine, illicit activities, as well, being quite enigmatic in his variable transactions (dealings and contact)- Qarzten Caimund, despite the entailed danger (of withholding vital info) had in the end forwent his obligation to his Sovereign and remained silent. Then again, expectantly, Danzek Zhadog Borym had bided his time also, and for a decade the Wenjenkun’s government had no cause (reason) to be wary of this border chieftain.

08- DANZEK ZHADOG BRYM (22)JP

Danzek during his fifth and sixth year as Turkeon Tribal Chieftain however, had surreptitiously exerted a profound influence on the other tribes in that region and his agile, formidable forces in midst of two consecutive winters, having engaged in seven minor and two major skirmishes, had subjugated, and then immersed four principal (main) tribes into Turkeon Tribe. Danzek, had also forged solid alliances (by way of) through three advantageous marriages (polygamy being an accepted norm), to bind all the different ethnic tribes solidly together under one rule. During these last few months, he had moreover, covertly rallied the disgruntled Wenjenkun dissidents and suppressed masses with an unprecedented speed and efficiency, to achieve his ultimate purpose, which was the creation of a humane, powerful, and new independent state.

Danzek’s covert negotiations with Emperor Hedenko had additionally, borne fruit within the last month and, with Kontu's superior armament and a heavier arsenal backing him, Danzek’s cavalry had become a force to be reckoned. His agile mounted troops (archers) rumored to be a hundred thousand strong and virtually unstoppable, had swept (cut) across Bacaun Province and, according to recent reports, was encamped in the environs of the province’s capital, Tizanbbai. In that same report it was also stated that recent situation was dire (critical), especially since Military Governor Shunget Honen’s army, after suffering heavy losses in their last engagement with Danzek Zhadog Borym’s forces, was presently running out of strategic supplies (armament, food rations and fodder). Forced into a defensive mode, they had requested military assistance (aid and reinforcements) before they could re-engage the enemy. The requested reinforcements had already been, in accordance with Sovereign Zakhertan Yozdek’s dictate, redirected (diverted) from the adjacent Province of Wantherran.

09- DANZEK ZHADOG BORYM-  (51)JP

In view of the difficulties of the terrain/topography and the onset of winter however, even with a continuous forced march they could not be expected to arrive there in less than a month. Qarzten Caimund had therefore been dispatched post haste, to proceed to Tizanbbai and once there, to steal valuable time until the reinforcements had arrived. Then, by taking charge (command) of the situation, he was to permanently resolve this problem of the (amassed) culminative forces of Turkeon Tribe for the last time. His orders had been explicit, and he was given unlimited power in that Province with even higher authority than that of the Governor General to bring about (to effect) this decisive outcome.

Qarzten Caimund had eagerly accepted this assignment knowing only he could resolve it with favorable outcome for his sworn brother and as well, complete it, with minimal bloodshed.

Danzek, from that unfortunate time when Qarzten had so regrettably, erroneously betrayed him- since then, his heart turned to stone, had harboured intense ire and animosity (hated) towards Qarzten and permanently severed all kinship ties with Qarzten. Once his mind was made up, he could not be (reached or) reasoned with; Danzek was as stubborn as a mule in that way and thus, nothing Qarzten had said or done, wavered him from his resolve.  Qarzten Caimund however, had seen the error of his ways, and deeply regrated his past actions; he’d thence, had sworn an inner oath, come what may, to make amends (set things right) and to win his sworn brother’s trust back. Qarzten had equally stubborn innate nature and so, he’d remained relentless in his determination, undaunted by all obstacles, to win Danzek back.

This assignment had provided him the golden opportunity, to do just that; though, this contrasting recourse (his amended/altered implementation of the original orders)- that entailed a most dangerous stratagem, perhaps a foolish gambit (scheme, tactic) wrapped in scant hope- if it should it go awry, could certainly end his career (risk all he’d worked to achieve) and possibly, terminate (forfeit) his life. Despite the grave risk, he’d remained nevertheless adamant, to maneuver, to carve an ingenious path through his divided loyalties and to execute the impossible feat; thus, spare his sworn brother’s life, instead of, typically and without question, obey Zakhertan’s stern command. Would he succeed? Well, that depended on many variables, some of it being outside of his control; consequently, at present, his heart palpitated wildly with both anxiety and hope, threatening to burst out of his (chest) ribcage.

Afterwards, hopefully at the successful conclusion of this matter in Bacaun Province, and still in good graces of Sovereign Zakhertan, he would then forthwith realize (fulfill) the subsequent order of ‘the pacification of Subain Province’.  Thereupon would remain the singular third command, which required Qarzten utilizing his ruthless efficiency and negotiating abilities for him to accomplish it; moreover, it would have to be done with utmost discretion since it involved a member of the Royal Clan.

                                                                                        ~

Before that could happen however, the capricious (varying) fate had already set in motion, an altered, inconceivable, nonetheless propitious (auspicious) future; one where both Qarzten Caimund and Danzok Zhadog Borym’s distinctive attributes (characteristics) would bring them both fame and fortune.

LEGEND OF NEVETSECNUAC - ON THE WAY TO THE CAPITAL - SECTION 26

LEGEND OF NEVETSECNUAC - ON THE WAY TO THE CAPITAL - SECTION 26

Because the official who had originally chartered the dispatch boat was most eager to reach his destination, soon as Zunrogo's party stepped onto the deck, the anchor was hauled up and the craft immediately headed out.

01- AN OFFICIAL  LUVET

The same official had remained cloistered in his cramped cabin (private quarters) for the remainder of the journey, with always his head buried deep in documents. The crew went about their business efficiently but edgily in that tense, pervading (all encompassing) atmosphere.

Earlier Fradel Rurik Korvald (Nevetsecnuac) had been told that, for security reasons, his true identity had not been disclosed to anyone on board, it seemed to Nevetsecnuac; thus, Zunrogo’s presence alone was sufficient grounds to put everyone on their unease (tenterhooks), including the official, with his self-imposed confinement. Nevertheless, for the next several days their journey passed uneventfully, as both the river current, and the wind sped them downstream until, at the crack of dawn on one overcast day, the government craft safely moored at the designated slip in Kenzor harbor. Had it not been for the vessel's urgent need for repairs, Zunrogo, without a moment's hesitation, would have confiscated the craft for the rest of the voyage and pressed on.  Instead, by the time it took Fradel and Zunrogo to consume a satisfying hot breakfast at one of the prospering tea houses, Tizan had expeditiously booked another passenger boat and had their luggage transferred aboard, ready for their prompt (summary) departure.

Later that same morning, when they set off for the Capital, there were only few other boats sharing their course (headed the same way).  By noon the fair-weather-wind, rolling down the river valley from the north had again picked up momentum (speed). To take full advantage, their swift, modern craft at once hoisted its triangular sails and, instantly picking up speed, in no time at all put a considerable distance between them and the rest of the riverboats, save one.  This one seemed to be persistently keeping up the pace.

On the subsequent days this same north wind brought down drizzling rain and fog so dense that the riverbanks became virtually invisible. Then the blustery weather picking up force, out of nowhere herded in, a dark mass of clouds that turned midday into dusk.  The river water, churned by the tempest wind speed, broke up into rolling, silvery waves that tossed snowy foam onto the deck, perpetually rocking the craft until the dowels and bindings that held the craft together were strained to the breaking point.

The captain of the vessel, Ortusz Doku, responding to the petitions of his other, sickened passengers and, the insistence of his crew, bent on his knees before Zunrogo to obtain his permission to steer the craft into a safe harbor before the boat was battered apart by the storm.

Neither Zunrogo nor Tizan were affected in the least bit by the incessant rocking of the boat.  Frowning and cursing, Zunrogo denigrated Ortusz with his cutting words until the captain, his pride sorely bruised, made to leave.  But then Zunrogo (on second thought) relented and gave his consent.  Soon after the vessel was expertly steered through the blinding rain into a bend in the river where the anchor was cast, and the ship moored fast by strong ropes to huge trees onshore. Just in time too, for suddenly strong, gale force winds sprang up as the worst of the storm hit. The vessel, safely moored, still was violently, unmercifully rocked, like it was but a toy.  The waves beat against the shore in an angry uproar as torrential, pelting rains drenched everything to the core.  Thankfully, the precautions they had just taken enabled the boat to ride out the storm and sustain only minimal damage.

During this grueling episode, akin (like) other passengers, Fradel (Nevetsecnuac) had fought off the terrible motion sickness; but then, under the watchful eye of Zunrogo Tugo, reluctantly had taken some medicated wine at Tugo’s insistence, which in fact aside from some troubling side-effects, had alleviated (assuaged) his discomfort.  In this partially vulnerable state, chiefly to get his mind off his ailment, he had, moreover, dashed off a few lines of verse about boats and storms.  The brilliance of poetry composed in such dire straits won him Zunrogo’s great admiration and, in due course, eliminated the Captain of the Palace Guard's last (ounce) residue of suspicion.

Finally (on the third day), when the storm abated, the boat was made ready, with improvised improvements to, just before noon, cast off.

As the journey continued it appeared to an observer, looking only at the deceptive shroud of congeniality spread by Fradel Rurik Korvald and Zunrogo that they were conversing frankly, without the least inhibition.  Yet, after hours of conversation, Zunrogo had to admit that he found this stimulating intellectual sparring more exhilarating, more closely akin to combating a powerful foe on the battlefield and, he began to crave more of it.

Nevetsecnuac’s assumed, present identity had seriously constrained (curtailed) his abilities, forcing him to adapt to more shrewd and indirect means; and so, while seemingly obliging Captain Zunrogo, he used this opportunity instead, to explore (delve deeper into) Captain's innate nature and, extracted from Zunrogo, few, well-guarded detrimental weaknesses and flaws.  Once this was accomplished Fradel (Nevetsecnuac) relaxed his vigil, as he much preferred fighting any formidable foe directly, by way of (via) tangible (physical) combat.

As both Nevtsecnuac and Zunrogo possessed remarkable staying powers, the ensued lively exchange utilizing acumen, wits, and stratagem (subterfuge), had continued well into the night, with no possibility of satisfactory cessation.  There came a time, however, upon discussing a particular concern, after several fruitless turns and diversionary strategies, Zunrogo (the undefeated champion) was forced to, for a spell, capitulate Fradel's point of view.

04- - CAPTAIN ZUNROGO TUGO JP 2

And though Fradel (Nevetsecnuac) at present, incurred deep respect for his brilliance from Zunrogo, captain not being one to cede, with renewed zeal (fervor) he quickly revised his stance (estimation, viewpoint) and retaliated.  His irrefutable logic (analysis) gave him the added edge and, following this up with an all-out offensive, he achieved his absolute victory.  Fradel could have still challenged some of the seemingly unequivocal deductions, but with due practicality, he instead, gracefully conceded to defeat.

Fradel's mind, meanwhile, had been all along distracted by other matters, one of which was their pursuer.  Even though the ensuing (following) vessel had been temporarily lost to sight in the storm, Fradel hypothesized that it would again catch up to them in a day or two after the weather abated.

Several times Fradel, having concluded that it was Lance Diostin; he had wanted to drop that name casually in conversation, to observe Zunrogo’s reaction.  Each time however deciding otherwise, he’d held his tongue in check.

For what possible reason could he give for even knowing the name Lance Diostin?  More importantly, there had been this nagging feeling that he had harbored since they boarded this vessel.  There was more at stake here than what met the eye, more vital and sinister than the threat to his life.  What it was, unfortunately, he had not yet ascertained, and its nature kept eluding him.

On this particular concern, Fradel's otherwise foolproof methods of inquiry had met an impenetrable wall erected by Zunrogo.  Even after Fradel had yielded the argument to drop latter’s guard, Zunrogo had held on fast to this secret with unusual grit and tenacity.  Fradel could gain no grasp of the actual situation and was left, in the end, with only his unsubstantiated intuition.

                                                                                       ~

Later that night, Fradel fortuitously happened on a confidential conversation between Zunrogo and Tizan and caught a singular reference being made to Lance Diostin's martial prowess.  Fradel was intrigued, to say the least, by Zunrogo’s respectful references to his adversary.

Was Lance Diostin such a competent foe that he cast a doubt in Zunrogo’s heart?  Keeping his hand poised above the door's handle, Nevetsecnuac (Fradel) eavesdropped for a longer spell.

From the disjointed, coded then decoded fragments that were being discussed Nevetsecnuac (Fradel) deduced that Tizan had previously sighted Lance Diostin at Kenzor harbor and Zunrogo had arrived at a similar conclusion as his (Nevetsecnuac),

That Lance Diostin’s craft was indeed trailing them.

Nevetsecnuac further suspected that once the storm had abated the enemy vessel (craft) would swiftly descend upon them for that decisive fray. Despite his readiness however, his intuition (the gnawing feeling in the pit of his stomach) forewarned him that there was far more at stake here than Zunrogo let on.

Zunrogo was about to instruct Tizan on the finer points of the strategic defenses, that were to be utilized against Lance Diostin’s impending assaults, when Fradel Rurik Korvald's sudden knock at the door startled them both.

Fradel quickly dispensing with the polite preliminaries took the seat offered to him across from the captain.  Getting right to the point and feigning ignorance, he then confessed to overhearing the name of Lance Diostin as he was about to knock on the door and, audaciously, inquired after the information associated with that name.

Zunrogo's reluctant and evasive answers further piqued Nevetsecnuac’s (Fradel's) curiosity; he, nevertheless, letting it go, pretended to have been satisfied with Captain's makeshift explanations.  Fradel quickly stated what he had originally come to say, and then abruptly rose to bade them good night and then hastily withdrew.

Back in his cabin, with many concerns praying on his mind, Nevetsecnuac did not (immediately) go to bed, instead, he set down in comfortable chair and reflected on the past exchange between Zhadol and Yennic.  As far as he could tell, there were three reasons to account for Lance Diostin's pursuit: a feud between the two factions; Dwengzu's prediction that, should Fradel Rurik Korvald be allowed to reach Channing, it would bring about Egil Viggoaries’s premature death (or, serious downfall); and some third reason which still eluded him.  His thoughts then reverted to Yennic’s (blatant) unabashed approval, when he was informed that Lance Diostin would be guarding the river route.

Thinking of the upcoming confrontation between Zunrogo and Lance Diostin, Fradel grinned wryly.  “That should prove rather interesting, though I doubt that I, Fradel Rurik Korvald, will be allowed to witness this remarkable combat. Yet, what if both Zunrogo and Tizan, despite their combined effort, can’t…? “He lowered his eyes thoughtfully and tersely drummed his fingers on the chair arm.

05- NEVETSECNUAC  JP 23

“It is conceivable that they might not measure up to the task.  What then?”  Nevetsecnuac reflected short time later, recalling Zunrogo's apparent anxiety when he had casually mentioned Lance Diostin’s name, to him. “What if they did indeed succumb to the prowess of this formidable foe?  If that is the case, I'll be constrained to fend for myself and then eliminate all who witnessed the fighting.  More slaughter!”  He shifted uneasily into the chair.

Aside from the vessel's Captain, Doku, and his crew and their own party, there were four other passengers on board: a young couple with an infant son and a reserved, semi-retired official.  The rest had good fortune to leave the river boat after the storm and preceded the rest of their way on land.  The remaining passengers kept very much to themselves and, for the most part, stayed in their cabins.

“If the circumstances dictate it, would I have the heart?” He knew he would not.

“There was only one option, the only alternative choice, for him to take; yes,” he nodded decisively.

                                                                                      ~

The last remnants of the storm had finally abated at dawn, leaving the river a bit more swollen and the currents in the center a touch faster.

As Zunrogo and Fradel had (independently) forecasted, two days later the sail of the pursuing craft was spotted for a split second, bearing swiftly down on them from the distance, just before the river turned to hide them once more.  Accepting Zunrogo's reluctance to discuss the matter, Fradel, acting as though he had seen nothing, occupied himself with the typical scholarly concerns of reading and composing while discreetly noting the flurry of activity among the deck hands.

They did not see the vessel again for some time after that.

LEGEND OF NEVETSECNUAC - THE STATE OF THINGS - SECTION 12

LEGEND OF NEVETSECNUAC - THE STATE  OF THINGS - SECTION 12

Nevetsecnuac politely coughed to break the uneasy silence and then adroitly, with apt sensitivity, addressed all the areas of difficulty till most of Fradel's qualms were eased.  As it were, even though Fradel's literary work had won him fame and his reputation had been widespread throughout the Kingdom, his previous seclusion proved to be a bonus (advantage) to their present plan (stratagem). No one, not even the Prime Minister Lamont Gudaren who was responsible for his recommendation at Court (save for a few acquaintances in Fradel’s remote region), knew of his precise physical appearance.

NEVETSECNUAC AND FRADEL

Nevetsecnuac was erudite (scholarly, cultured, widely read); now factor in the official’s hasty, unprecise (undetailed) sketch on the ID permit, then, Nevetsecnuac could easily pass as Fradel.  All that remained at present was for the Nevetsecnuac to be briefed (updated) on the pertinent details of what was expected of him upon his arrival at the Capital and at his presentation at Court, as had been previously relayed to Fradel by the Imperial palace guard Tuo (special attaché of P.M. from the Rights division).  Diligently, Fradel began to share all he knew, even though he was extremely tired and barely able to stay awake.

"Elder Brother, you are exhausted.  Why do you persist in going on?” Nevetsecnuac was concerned about Fradel’s health, just then asserted. “Please get some rest.  Since there are still so many details that need going over, I will stick around (linger, tarry) for an extra day." To encourage Fradel to retire, Nevetsecnuac, quickly snuffed out (blew) the two candle lights, leaving only one.

“All right… Good… I will go rest then. “Fradel, inwardly overjoyed to have his brother with him for another day, lethargically rose from his seat and, after divesting his outer suit coat, climbed under the covers of the bed.

FRADEL

"I look forward to exchanging more info…" His voice trailed to silence for, no sooner had his head touched the pillow than he sank instantly into a deep slumber.

Nevetsecnuac subsequently following Fradel's lead, had also gone to bed. The r
oom at present enveloped in pitch darkness and tranquil air (silence) permeating throughout now that the storm outside had subsided, it became highly conducive to sleep yet sleep averted Nevetsecnuac. Laying on his back (reposing) perfectly still till small hours, his mind enumerated (reckoned, listed) every possible circumstance, hoping to ensure (secure) Fradel's safety, as well, exempt Fradel from suspicion of conspiracy, for Nevetsecnuac did not wish to have on his conscience, another purge of the Scholars. Only after Nevetsecnuac had resolved every variance of peril (risk, hazard), did he closed his eyes to gain some rest, but by then it was too late, the cock's crow outside announced the arrival of a new day.

The help downstairs was already, heard, stirring; quietly Nevetsecnuac rose from his bed, washed up, dressed, then exited the room. Nevetsecnuac informed the innkeeper of their intention to stay for an additional day and left with them the instructions that Fradel presently was not disturbed.  Then he went to the stable to check on the horses.

It was late morning, long after Nevetsecnuac had breakfasted and taken a ride to survey the countryside that Fradel awoke.  During the course of the day, they both rode the safe pathways that Nevetsecnuac had found and talked at length as Nevetsecnuac's ingenious plan was unfolded.

NEVETSECNUAC

Fortunately, as apt precaution, both had given false (synonym) names when they had sought lodgings (and registered), as well, refrained from divulging their travel plans to the very inquisitive Innkeeper, the night before.  Later still, Nevetsecnuac had learned, by conversing with the help, that by some good fortune they had taken the roundabout route to Fradel's destination, the Provincial Capital of Toren.  This road first bypassed the town of Monter and was not as frequented as the other.  Accordingly, Fradel was instructed to, upon reaching Monter, claim that he had taken the more direct route; this way the incriminating evidence (clue) of their being seen together at the inn, would hence be missed (concealed, overlooked) by the future probable (likely) investigators overseeing Fradel's case.

Rising at dawn the next day they left the inn.  After a full day’s ride at dusk stopping at the secluded spot, they set up camp.  Repast quickly concluded, as an added precaution their personal apparel worn at the inn and on the road leading there, was quickly consigned to the flames and they both donned scholar's garments.  Of course, Nevetsecnuac now carried all of Fradel's important papers on his person as well as, on Fradel's insistence, the special brush and ink pad, though the prince felt it would be of limited use.

Returning to the fork in the road, they then took the alternate, more direct route.  At a significant location they dismounted and buried Lord Asger's sword, for either of them to retrieve later.  This was necessary as Nevetsecnuac would most undoubtedly be searched at the city gate.

It was also determined that, in order to enforce the deception, they must also exchange their steeds.

His heart laden with misgivings, Fradel watched Fiery Comet's defiance, how he neighed, trotted and shook his head wildly as Nevetsecnuac led the horse by the reins towards him.  Halting a few feet away, Nevetsecnuac stroked Fiery Comet's mane and patiently whispered his brief instructions into the defiant animal's ear until the stallion nodded his head in assent.

How remarkable! Fradel mused.  Can a beast truly be that intelligent?

Surmising Fradel's thoughts, Nevetsecnuac rejoined with a smile as he handed over the reins, "He's like no other, Fradel.  Rest assured, in compliance with my wishes he'll curb his temper and carry you safely to your destination.  When in doubt you may rely on his instincts.  He will deliver you from all danger."

Half convinced; Fradel nodded.

When all had been said and done, the two embraced one last time as brothers and bid an emotional farewell to each other.

Still apprehensive about riding such a magnificent war horse, Fradel braced himself and climbed into the saddle.  Remarkably, just as Nevetsecnuac had assured him it would be, Fiery Comet trotted in a manner and at a speed befitting Fradel's own, more domesticated, gelding.  When a sudden gust of wind rose up to snatch Fradel's scholar's cap off of his head this intelligent animal halted instantly, without receiving any orders, and stood perfectly still until Fradel had dismounted, retrieved his cap.  When Fradel returned to mount him again, he noted the partially dried line of tears under the horse's eyes.  Shaking his head in disbelief, he put his foot in the stirrup and hauled himself back into the saddle.

With longing in his own heart, he then looked back and sought out the consistent form of his new brother, no more than a speck in the distance.  His eyes were soon obscured by tears, and, with blurred vision, he turned his head back in the direction of the road, not knowing that the distant figure stayed with them, just on the horizon, until dusk.
