11- LEGEND OF NEVETSECNUAC - EVIL PERSONIFIED - SECTION 27

11- LEGEND OF NEVETSECNUAC - EVIL PERSONIFIED - SECTION 27 - (BOOK 11- FINAL CHAPTER)

Indigo Owls,’ and The Shadow Brigades’ most recent concurrent reports however had revealed that radical elements and nonconformists had once again re-materialized, this time from the most unlikely quarter, though there had been no further activity since Lord Shouzi Yozdek’s dispatch (the now missing blackmail letter) which instigated a rebellion.

01-SHOUZI YOZDEK - JP - 4

The culprit Lord Shouzi's procrastination had nonetheless indicated that the planned uprising had been aborted or temporarily shelved. Latter being the stronger probability, and considering that Shouzi was no fool, nor would he undertake any action by halves, it meant that there was a far sinister ploy already in the works. This had warranted another prompt, stealthy (covert) incursion to quell the burgeoning trouble at the source; and so, Qarzten Caimund along with the small division of Black Band Guard Regiment had henceforth been swiftly dispatched to first secure irrefutable proof and then lawfully and permanently resolve this problem.

Back in capital, Sovereign Zakhertan Yozdek’s able agents from the Shadow Brigade meanwhile, had some time prior initiated the first part of the contingency plan by discreetly releasing certain information to Egil Viggoaries’s core team which in turn, had unleashed the anticipated, predictable set of events.

02- A ZAKHERTAN YOZDEDK  (49) JP

Zakhertan Yozdek showing atypical (uncharacteristic) patience in the interim, had bided his time for an apt revenge on the Lord Shouzi Yozdek; for the moment it was sufficient to set in motion certain undertakings to simply demoralize the Lord's supporters and, to make the Lord's life an insufferable, nightmarish Hell.

                                                                                      ~

Zakhertan Yozdek, being always informed of all his key subjects’ whereabouts, he knew that Lord Shouzi Yozdek would decidedly be residing at this time of the year in his favorite, posh residence (chateau) built on the higher altitude and in midst of dense, forested region of Kunset Mountains.

03-LORD SHOUZI HUNTING GROUNDS (COLLAGE)

Two or three times a year Shouzi stayed at this mansion (which was deceptively, well guarded and built to withstand any hostile incursion), to indulge in his favorite pastime, hunting, as there was in that pristine woodland, ample abundant game.

Zakhertan Yozdek’s stern visage (features) gradually eased as he now pondered and envisioned in his mind's eye the anticipated reaction of Lord Shouzi when he received the special, anonymous box from Channing:

At dusk Lord Shouzi Yozdek and his group of riders (with their mounts’ backs laden with game) returning from a typical hunting excursion, would pass through the heavily guarded front gate into the courtyard.

04- HUNTING PARTY AT GATE

The Chief Steward would at once rush out of the main building eager to assist his lordship in dismounting his chocolate brown stallion; solicitously, in a servile manner he would then trail Lord Shouzi and his selective group of friends (hunters), passing through the front foyer with an elaborate, three-story staircase and upper halls, then enter into the grandiose (rather ostentatious) reception hall.

Their mounts, meanwhile, would have been led to the stables, while the prize trophies: a deer, dozens (heaps) of hares, a wild boar or two, and the copious game birds (wild geese, turkey, ducks etc.), would have all been swiftly hauled, to the storage or to the kitchens, by the army of underlings. They would become the centerpieces of subsequent (succeeding) days’ feasts.

Lord Shouzi's smile would broaden as he temporarily (fleetingly) halting just inside the entrance of the huge drawing room, his approving (laudatory) gaze sweeps succinctly over (take in the picture of) his faithful guests, before subsequently extending his pithy (concise) felicitations to them.

Zakhertan at this point seditiously smirked,  envisioning the notable patricians, Lord Shouzi’s so called loyal friends: those who did not partake in the exercise of hunt, a frailer bunch nevertheless vital, erudite gentry, and the snobbish male or female coquettes (flirts) all decked out in their colourful brocade attire (garments, gowns) and adorned with gleaming gems-  leisurely lounging about, engaged either in board games or private conversations, some reading, some smoking a pipe, some pensively brooding while they listen to the delightful music; and, fewer still indulging their pallets (tastebuds) as they partake in rare morsels (artistically arranged, mounted on top silver ornate trays on the buffet table) , blending it with the small sips from golden goblets, Lord’s( private reserves of) vintage wines.

Some pretend not to have noticed his presence; few of those however, those that are not too supercilious (haughty, egotistical), though prior engrossed (occupied, absorbed), for a moment they pause (halt) what they are doing and in way of nod and a slight smile, reciprocate their akin, customary polite greetings (salutations) to him.

05- LORD SHOUZI'S PARTY - JP  (17)

Subsequently, the Lord and his hunting party withdraw to their private quarters to be refreshed, washed (cleaned) and don (put on, change into) more appropriate attire (clothing); they would then return to (re-group at) the huge dining room, to partake in the sumptuous feast and merry making.

Seated at the head of the table Lord Shouzi would then, embellishing the details, recount (describe) to the captive audience, the day's hunt, while the scantily dressed servants bustle about to and for (trotting back and forth), serving them more wine or lager beer, hot from the oven spicy bread, varied braised or barbecued meat, some of it in rich stew with plenty of vegetables.  Next, topping their culinary delight, would come the diverse (mixt) pastries- blood-pudding deserts, pies, multi-layer cakes and, finally, exotic fruits.

06 THE FEAST- 3

At this juncture, unexpectedly just then a messenger from Channing would arrive at the gate; horse and rider would be drenched in sweat from days’ ceaseless riding, with the mount's hooves having churned up huge clouds of dust along the way. The courier covered in dust would nevertheless be allowed to mount the steps and be let into the atrium (vestibule), where which after a short wait he would present His Lordship the gold and gem inlaid gift box. Lord Shouzi would receive it graciously, grinning (beaming) from ear to ear, seeing that it was from the Capital and anticipating therefore, only the best tidings…But then comes the delicious scene!

Zakhertan Yozdek had wished that he could have been there and witnessed firsthand the contemptible Lord's horror, reflected in every one of his attendants’ faces, as his gaze remained frozen upon the mutilated, though quite recognizable head of Nijel Pinng, his so-called invaluable agent, staring at him, that morbid face instantly dashing all hopes into bits and searing his heart with an inexplicable fear.

And in the aftermath of it, when Lord Shouzi quickly regains his senses, he would most certainly point the finger of blame at the only likely culprit, who else but Egil Viggoaries, for the notorious Surgeon Lubin's apparent handiwork would be unmistakable.

Brief time later, the news of Lord’s precious sons Yukksel and Konnur’s simultaneously accidental, tragic demises should reach him. At this point Zakhertan absentmindedly nodded his head, as he’d already received confirmation and the details of it, from his Serpent Death Squad; whom, three weeks prior he’d covertly assigned (dispatched), a small contingent of highly skilled assassins from the SDS, that had orchestrated Yukksel and Konnur Yozdek’s certain (guaranteed, absolute) destructions.

Lord Shouzi’s son Yukksel’s tragic death from the bizarre hunting mishap and Konnur’s, from a drowning calamity when the boat he was travelling in was attacked by an unknown group of pirates and capsized.

Zakhertan’s heart, temporarily for the moment was angst (tormented), for over the years he’d watched those proficient, adroit warriors and strikingly handsome boys grow up; furthermore, he had liked his nephews!

07-SHOUZI YOZDEK'S SECOND SON YUKKSEL AND THIRD SON KONNUR-3 JP

Zakhertan, suddenly needing a breath of fresh air, he stepped quietly outside of his second story respite-room to stand by the railing of his private veranda (terrace). He, for several moments just wistfully stared into distance of pitch darkness of the mantled earth, finding it strangely soothing; and thus, his momentary lapse of guilt gradually abated (ended, passed). But irately, those momentous occasions of their feat (achievements, deeds) rushed back to parade before his mind’s eye and razor-sharp talons gripped his heart anew and wrenched it; therefore, his conscience yet again smarted (ached, stung) by mass ruminations (musings), he pensively (reflectively, sadly) lifted his eyes and stared at the brilliant array of stars in the sky.

After a time Zakhertan, succeeding in once more turning his heart to stone, simply shrugged his shoulders. It was, after all, a necessary evil.  Once the unconsolable (devastated, utterly distraught) Lord Shouzi obtained an apt, planted proof (through various means) of who had authorized their expiry, the Dark Eunuch, would permanently thence, be regarded as the Lord's arch nemesis. The consequential fierce reprisals (retaliations, sequels) should then, if it does not destroy one of them, it at least will for this crucial period in time, seriously thwart (impede, hinder or foil) both Lord Shouzi’s (backed by P.M Lamont Gudaren) and Egil Viggoaries’s lasting (enduring) ambitions.

Zakhertan sporting a malevolent grin just then, imagined even allowing the patsy (pawn) victor, to temporarily (for short span) experience, to being the Sovereign of Wenjenkun and all that it entailed, before yanking the power away and initiating, the would-be usurper’s (and his supporters) traumatizing, utter annihilation (destruction, devastating ruin).

“And on that ‘Day of Reckoning,’ the champ (titleholder) can mount his bloody throne in Hell!”  Zakhertan Yozdek threw his head back and guffawed, cogitating on the delicious worst cruelty (harm) that had awaited all, particularly his detestable (hateful) kin Lord Shouzi Yozdek, the abhorrent Lamont Gudaren and the indubitably repugnant Dark Eunuch Egil Viggoaries, and finally, his most ardent foe Lord Asger Thuxur Marrog Zhon, the bane of his life.

08- EGIL VIGGORIES 2- JP.jpg3

Zakhertan’s amusement had nevertheless as abruptly had again vanished, as another annoyance (more serious irritant) unexpectedly just then, intruded into his brain. Why hadn’t there been any word from the dispatched, presumably most competent assassin Duan; did the Demon Lord Asger Zhon yet again absconded along with the devil’s spawn Prince Nevetsecnuac, both surviving his perilous snares? Why was he perpetually surrounded by intolerable (reprehensible) sheer incompetence?

His restless mood once more flared up, Zakhertan Yozdek could no longer sit still.

Blast! All this (documents needing his perusal and action) would have to wait. He needed to extinguish this searing fire engulfing his chest, before it consumed him; hence, he needed an outlet of some kind- preferably an intense combat, to release all that pent-up energy as well. If not, she would do in a pinch.

09- ZAKHERTAN YOZDEDK  (107)

Zakhertan hence, bolted to his feet and stormed downstairs and out the door. The grounds had once more reverted to being pitched dark as the whipping (punishing) high winds had congregated flotilla of clouds to obscure both the moon and the stars in the sky.

Even so, like a voracious, predacious beast, Zakhertan stalked the grounds of the North Palace in the dead of night from one end to the other (his personal guards hard pressed to keep up with his pace), even hoping to encounter an assassin. All the while unseen Palace sentinels stood on edge, for the Sovereign Zakhertan Yozdek was habitually again on the prowl, looking for a victim, a worthy prey to (tear apart and) devour.

Subsequent two hours Zakhertan ardently searched (looked) for something out of order, anything amiss, to unleash his fury on and to relieve this oppressive void sensation that seemed to have seeped into his bones and left him, his spirit, yet again restless and unsatisfied. Boredom was his arch nemesis, the worst kind of enemy!

But his efforts were all in vain, for he was the victim of his own efficiency.

Zakhertan eventually gave a huff of derision and turned, his steps leading him to the stables; a brief time later having mounted his pure-bred black stallion Night Thunder, he rode like the wind, to reach the South Palace where more than two hundred heavenly beauties existed just for his pleasure. He knew that this was no substitute for a goring fight or a blood-curdling, killing-spree sport (for exhilaration, diversion) but for the time being it would have to do. His steps eventually led him to the private quarters of Lady Sejon, though in the dead of night, his sudden presence created such an upsurge of fear and vitality that the place churned with buzzing beehive activity.

10- A ZAKHERTAN YOZDEDK  (10) JP2

Zakhertan had of course, first visited his son Magnian briefly then sought the company of his recent favorite Lady Sejon who would, he knew, perform just so to keep him amused and interested. The recent set of events and her deception had not impeded nor altered his attraction to her for it was only physical. As she was a cut above the others, he used her beauty, her body to satiate (satisfy) every now and then, that needy corner of his soul…

Besides which, as far as he was concerned, she had acted predictably for one in her position. He expected nothing less so, she would do for now, until he tired of her. Meanwhile, so skilled was Lady Sejon in the arts of pleasure that she always managed to entertain him even at times like this. It secretly amused Zakhertan to see how she responded, believing she was favored above all others. Careful not to overstep her boundaries, Sejon, niece of P.M. Lamont  Gudaren thought she was gradually ingratiating herself with at least nine influential courtiers.

She may or may not expire before the purge. Like a cat watching a mouse Zakhertan had given her certain liberties that he knew would be her undoing before long. Till then as he tracked her predictable progress, he expected to at least be mildly diverted from his other qualms (fret).

LEGEND OF NEVETSECNUAC - THE RENEGADE IMMORTAL - SECTION 17

LEGEND OF NEVETSECNUAC - THE RENEGADE IMMORTAL - SECTION 17

Resisting the urge to go outside, Hugen leaned his back against the wall and after exhaling a long breath, in an even tone he began with: “Meanwhile, Zakhertan Yozdek’s attentions were directed elsewhere to other regions where more profitable gains could be had.”

01- ZAKHERTAN YOZDEDK  (10) JP

“All the while millions were conscripted from all parts of Wenjenkun and the (other subjugated) auxiliary regions; many physically fit men and adolescent males were pressed into military service while women, scholars or the infirm were forced into the labor camps Zakhertan created to construct the mammoth projects he envisioned for his capital.”

“Hills were razed, channels were dug, and reservoirs built to multiply agricultural production in former deserts and, of course, grand palaces were commissioned in all four corners of the Kingdom. All the while families were uprooted and relocated to the remote regions of Wenjenkun he wanted populated.  The upshot of all of this, the costly expeditions, the grand schemes, despite the plunder he amassed, had still very nearly bankrupted the State Treasury in Channing.”

"Seen in this light, the subjugation of Korion was considered a serious liability and a definite unproductive drain on their economy.  It was deemed clearly pointless, for Wenjenkun to maintain its present tight rein (leash) on the deemed barbaric race that, could not be tamed and required mounting expenditures all for the facade (pretence, sham, deceit) of keeping it within Wenjenkun's civil guidelines. Happily, our point had been driven home well and good.  From all corners of the Kingdom (Wenjenkun) petitions regularly poured in, the writers knowingly risking pain of death, protesting the continuing military presence in Korion.  They acknowledged that our country bred the finest stock of horses, was endowed with precious gemstones of the finest quality, as well, had much required (needed) minerals and useful metals in quantity; yet despite the hefty annual tribute of these items flowing into Channing, it was costing Wenjenkun (government and administration) still more dearly to maintain scant, minimal control over this unforgiving, unruly region.  Their ministers argued the point that, the National Interests would be best served with more frugal allocation of their resources and by the deployment of armies (and military personnel) to other regions (countries) where more feasible and more advantageous returns could be had.”

"As it was, Zakhertan Yozdek urgently needed to composite another invincible military force, in order to conquer the Mokuzers at that time and, already having gained his revenge against our Lord and people, he was disposed to allow such criticism.  By this time Zakhertan's arrogance and megalomania had reached its (apex) zenith and, when presented with the petition in the Great Zonggotu Hall, he was recorded as having said, "Well, if this grubbing race of barbarians can resurrect a single Royal pedigree (lineage) to rule them, I’ll permit it; Korion then may, within reason, have whatever autonomy they can muster."  He of course had been certain (quite convinced) that there were none of the Royal line left alive to take up the reign of power in Korion.”

"Unknown to him, there was indeed one who had escaped his evil carnage."  Patiently Hugen explained, " Sometime prior, the youngest sister of His Highness the late Harkan Konzuran Binchan, Princess Jenor, as the tribal custom demanded, had been entrusted to chieftain Kureshi Nokuzuk’s care, to be brought up from the age of ten till she reached the age of seventeen, by which time she was to be wed to Yeru, the third son (for the first son was too old and already married, and the second son already dead, succumbed to an accident) of the powerful tribal chieftain Kureshi Nokuzuk, in order to ensure a lasting peace with this fierce nomadic race to the North.“

02- TRIBAL CHIEFTAIN KURESHI NOKUZUK

“After this alliance had been struck, all hostilities and border incursions in the northern sector had of course ceased and, this peace has lasted to date. “Hugen pensively nodded, then almost imperceptibly (subtly) the corners of his mouth lifted in a grimace (smirk). “Anyhow, this well-kept secret, Princess Jenor, the sole surviving member of the Royal Binchan Clan, was a legendary beauty. After Princess Jenor and Yeru’s nuptials, Princess Jenor in time had born two daughters who rivaled her in fairness, and a brilliant son, Yoshikan.  Here’s were things gets interesting: This male offspring (with Binchan royal bloodline) was promptly recalled to Korion to claim his rightful place as Sovereign of our country.”

“The Chieftain Kureshi Nokuzuk, for obvious reasons, raised no real objections to the recall, and even if Yeru had any qualms, I dare say that his opinions were quickly overridden by Kureshi, to the greater benefit of all.  And so it came to pass that, at the age of ten, on a blessed and joyful day, our Illustrious Sovereign, Yoshikan Sousing Nokuzuk Binchan, was duly enthroned.”

"Of course, Zakhertan Yozdek was outraged (livid) to learn of this and, I understand, many suffered his terrible wrath.  Since, however, his promise had the strength of an Imperial edict, it could not be rescinded, and Zakhertan had to let the Coronation proceed.  Still, he managed to slip a catch into it.  The boy King was deemed to be of too tender an age, to rule unaided and, since the appointed Regent had mysteriously succumbed to a fatal infection after a routine wound which had been improperly dressed, Zakhertan Yozdek’s elder relation, a grasping licentious cur calling himself Guobin Yozdek, was appointed (in its stead) as the new Regent.  With the aid of a cotillion of advisors specially transported with him from Wenjenkun, this piece of offal was given leave to govern Korion for eight years until Yoshikan Sousing Nokuzuk Binchan’s age of ascent.  Though this was nominally an interim appointment, Zakhertan’s design was obviously to have the situation closely monitored and controlled and the boy King's abilities assessed.  If Yoshikan were to show even the least potential of becoming a strong, capable leader then he was to be covertly disposed of, regardless of any future consequences. But despite his youth, His Highness Yoshikan Sousing Nokuzuk Binchan had already possessed a most discerning mind and alerted at the very start to this danger, he’d played his part brilliantly, in order to beguile his planted (spy) Royal Entourage (attendants, governors, tutors etc.) and to allay all their fears.”

“Of course, Zakhertan Yozdek would not be so easily duped and summoning our Sovereign to Channing numerous times, tested him in countless, vigorous, varied ways, dishing out all manner of insults to his person and country to see if Yoshikan or his loyal courtiers would have the backbone or strong will to strike back; but they, with all due humility and perseverance, subjected themselves to these indignities. “

“This caused Zakhertan to despise our Sovereign Yoshikan Sousing Nokuzuk Binchan even more as a spineless weakling and, predictably, to turn his attention to a more pressing concerns; one of which was the blatant and rapidly growing influence and power of Guobin Yozdek.”

03--GUOBIN YOZDEK  (18)JP

“Guobin’s ambitious nature, as an oversight going unchecked, he’d become progressively more pompous, dictatorial and, even worse, defiant. You see, during his last state visit to Channing, Guobin deeming himself to be the most competent administrator, had brazenly (unabashedly) taken full credit for the pacification of Korion and the revival of its thriving economy. Guobin had further enraged Zakhertan Yozdek, by the unveiling of his long-term, lofty ambition; suggesting in words stronger than a mere request that, Wenjenkun should dispense with the charade and proclaim him instead, as the sole ruler of Korion. More outrageously still, Guobin had exposed his sinister plan to Zakhertan, which’d been ready to be implemented at a moment’s notice, to murder our young Sovereign Yoshikan through (via) poisoning or an induced illness.  The Regent Guobin banking on his status in family (as blood-relation), had erroneously supposed that, after his reporting of an alleged, disgraceful incident involving Prince Yoshikan, he had reached a sympathetic kinship’ ear.”

“Meanwhile, unknown to the aspiring King of Korion, our Illustrious Prince Yoshikan, because of his uprightness and humility, had progressively gained a strong and loyal following in both Korion and with the dissidents (nonconformists) in Wenjenkun.  These supporters, seeing the time was ripe, had already implemented, carefully orchestrated series of rumors and incidents which made it appear as though Guobin had long since being conspiring to usurp the throne of Korion, right under the nose of Zakhertan Yozdek. As proof, they’d   obtained depositions (affidavits) and had those incognito (anonymously) leaked to authorities in Channing, from other contiguous nations’ Princes who were no allies of Korion, intimating that Guobin had solicited their support, with the suggestion of constant border incursions, to destabilize Wenjenkun’s strong government.  Same period, several Guobin’s enthusiasts were furtively (stealthily) exposed planning their machinations, to internally undermine Zakhertan Yozdek’s rule, which would then, by way of a nation-wide rebellion, would have brought about Zakhertan’s eventual downfall. At this juncture Korion’s armies would have then swooped down to fulfill Guobin’s fantastic high ambition of uniting both countries under his new Dynasty.”

“This obviously infuriated Zakhertan Yozdek, who acted swiftly and brutally but in a much stronger fashion than could have ever been anticipated or hoped. With a single stroke, Guobin Yozdek and the untrustworthy Princes along with all their supporters and countless other suspected conspirators were all, maliciously and sadistically eradicated.” Hugen at this point pausing donned a somewhat sinister, satisfactory grin.  “This brought about the accession of our Illustrious Sovereign Yoshikan Sousing Nokuzuk Binchan a full two years before the ordained time. And of course, you know the rest." Hugen waved his hand in dismissal and, rising to his feet, strode outside to relieve himself.

After the rain, with the wind subsiding and most of the flotilla clouds gone away, the night’s sky was now decked with blinking stars (patently) markedly flirting with the half crescent moon; meanwhile, Earth was still mantled (blanketed) in black, with periodically dancing hazy, indistinct sundry shapes. Hugen grimaced, suddenly hearing a (cry) hooting of an owl that was perfectly camouflaged up in the tree some ways off, and knowingly nodded.    Lingering at outside Hugen inhaled deeply and filled his lungs with the refreshingly cool, crisp evening air. Reluctant to return to the confines of the ramshackle hut, he offhandedly at first pinned his empty gaze into the dark void; moment later however, in his mind’s eye he was visualizing and nostalgically reminiscing about the exciting exploits of heroes, some he knew all too well, a long, long time ago. His thoughts again reverting to his beloved Sovereign, Hugen reflected on how even before his ascension His Highness Yoshikan had spent many long grueling hours holding Court in secret, all well hidden beneath the guise of licentious parties. Through these long processes some of the necessary changes had been surreptitiously and, (gradually) by small degrees, incorporated into the existing system. His Highness had tirelessly toiled night and day to draw up effective stratagems for resurrecting the nation from the ashes, rebuilding it to its former glorious strength so that once more they could become a Country to contend with. Soon as he was legally King of Korion, Yoshikan had appointed these certain able ministers’ and with their help instituted apt effective measures that had been so many years in the making.

04- YOSHIKAN SOUSING NOKUZUK BINCHAN  -JP

His Highness Yoshikan Sousing Nokuzuk Binchan’s subsequent edict had amended the flawed old system of governance and law; after which had occurred, the purging of all undesirables’ right down to the root.  Those spies, collaborators and moles that had been pinpointed (found out) sometime prior, were either converted, bought out or kept on to unknowingly pass on misinformation to Wenjenkun.  A few, very few, were discreetly killed when they proved uncooperative.  Zakhertan Yozdek hence, all this time had been fed a deceptive picture of the state of Korion and was lulled into a false sense of security that had lasted to the present day.

Hugen re-entering the dilapidated (rundown) hut, quietly sat in the same spot and periodically, somewhat distractedly, gazed at the far corner, as he waited for Uyuk’s return.

“Odd, there's that feeling again, a strong sense of danger gnawing at my innards. Plus, the hairs on the back of my neck are bristling, which is a sure sign of peril.” As it was, Hugen's intuition had never failed him.  His piercing gaze once more astutely scrutinized the corner from where he sat, keenly examining (observing), that small pile of debris against the far wall.  “There's nothing outwardly strange, yet there's something odd about it, something I can't rightly pinpoint (explain); perhaps the way the broken shards of furniture are resting, the pattern of the bricks and mortar, that broken jug handle, was it there before?”

Just then Hugen was distracted by Uyuk's noisy return from the business he had just concluded outside.  Uyuk, sensing his partner's mood, quietly took up the same position he had just vacated a moment ago.  "What's up?” he then leaned forward to ask in a conspiratorial whisper.

"I'm not sure.” Hugen grunted. After shaking his head, he leaned back against the wall and closed his eyes, remaining deliberately oblivious to Uyuk's questioning, piercing gaze.

“That mouse I saw scurrying across to his hole when I came back must have disturbed it.” Hugen quietly mused.  “Either that, or, Hmm...No, that’s too improbable.”  Before long, his thoughts again (turned) reverted to his beloved Sovereign.

His Royal Highness Yoshikan Sousing Nokuzuk Binchan in the ensuing years, living prudently and encouraging all his ministers to follow suit, had shared the abysmal hardships of his subjects. He’d abolished (inherited) fiefdoms; furthermore, on his Highness’s directive, the Governing Council had per annum, assiduously apportioned (allotted) the nation's wealth among its citizens high and low.  Standards were set and strictly regimented; communications improved; taxes remained moderate; the enforced laws were strict but nevertheless fair and just.  People willingly worked harder and toiled longer hours, knowing that it was for the common good and, they got to keep a good portion of their profits for themselves.  This encouraged them to exert themselves and their abilities to the maximum for the harder they worked, the better off they were, and the better off their children's lives would be. The future, no longer bleak, looked bright and promising for all.  Piety and propriety abounded, and industrious citizens had in time flourished. Sovereign Yoshikan never letting himself for a moment to forget the disgrace that his lineage and his subjects for more than decade and a half now had borne (suffered, endured), unrelentingly hence, had kept up his vigil, setting a good example as well as being, an inspiration to all. Thus, Sovereign Yoshikan had earned his subjects' undying love and unfaltering loyalty in a way that all other leaders since time immemorial would envy.  He’d become the true heartbeat of their nation.  Every citizen without question would suffer the torments of Hell, would surrender their very lives without a single moment's hesitation if it would benefit their beloved Sovereign or their nation.

In this respect, then, Hugen was not alone; furthermore, Hugen like all good patriots, lived and breathed in anticipation of the day Zakhertan Yozdek and Wenjenkun would be totally eradicated, obliterated from the face of the Earth and the pages of History.  Impatience gnawed at him daily as his heart ached increasingly with the unstinted yearning to see that day when it would all come to pass.

"Unfortunately, our resourceful, well-respected Minister Tuvering Bokurek has deemed the time is not yet ripe; and his advice is always sound.  Some even compare his competence and forte akin to the Illustrious Wushing." Suddenly Hugen broke his long, prolonged silence and looking directly at Uyuk, enunciated (voicing) the subsequent thought that’d just then intruded into his mind.

It was obvious that Uyuk had been thinking along these same lines as he abstractedly drew circles on the dirt floor, for he nodded; but then, seconds later frowning, he shook his head and grumbled. "The time is not yet ripe.  When will it be ripe?  Why is he stalling?" His eyes affixed on Hugen he now pressed on: "We formed that new alliance with Luso and Dokurak after Terz to…"

"That information is highly confidential!” Hugen barked, aghast. “How did you come by it?"

"Oh I, too, have my resources."  Uyuk smiled smugly then pinned his defiant gaze on Hugen.  "But don't you go imagining that there is a leak in the High Council.  After all, you are the only one I've disclosed this to, and this I did only because I know for a fact that you were already aware of it."

"Right, well I know exactly where and from whom you acquired your information but never mind." Hugen looked away to hide his extreme annoyance.

“That little vermin should have been exterminated (eradicated) some years ago if it were not for his powerful backers.” Hugen still livid, mulled over. “But this breach is inexcusable!  As soon as I get back, I'll push to have him eliminated, disposed off permanently, for after this violation (flouting) a mere dismissal will now not suffice.”

Hugen understood well, how this move would incur great animosity towards him and create lasting enemies.  “That brute does have so many influential friends.”  For a second he’d wavered; reflecting on those ardent nemesis’s, which were always after his hide. “So, what,” Grimacing, he shrugged. “Let them add a few more grievances to an already long list.”

Uyuk had perfunctorily dismissed that certain cringe he’d felt in his heart, and now suppressing the alarming thoughts as well, simply grunted. "Yet I fail to comprehend just how much more time Minister Bokurek needs to have, to give the final go-ahead.  Aren't we as ready as we'll ever be?"

05-MINISTER OF KORION TUVERING BOKUREK   (3)

"Surely the good Minister's reasons are explicit enough…  Why should we show our hand prematurely and awaken the sleeping giant?”  Hugen snorted disdainfully. "Besides, aren't you overlooking something of vital importance?"

"What?"  As Hugen then turned his stone gaze back on him, Uyuk decided not to feign total ignorance. "Oh, you mean the implications of the failed assassination."

"You can be exasperatingly quite tiresome at times."

Uyuk threw his head back and laughed uproariously but then abruptly halted it and drew close to seriously murmur, "It’s nevertheless quite regrettable that General Kunsun had failed in his mission." Out of the corner of his eye Uyuk had watched for the expected reaction and finding nothing, he groaned. "Many hopes hung on him, so sure we were that he would succeed."  He looked Hugen straight in the eye this time and shrugged, as if to take the edge off his next remark, "You think it took any stretch of imagination, any brilliance at all, to deduce just who the assassin was?  He was after all, the best candidate for the task; unfortunately, his demise will be a tremendous loss for our State. He deserved better, especially after his rendering of myriad years of invaluable service to our Sovereign and the State. Oh, shame of it all that the General’s corpse had ended up the way it did; to date I’m tormented by the wretched condition of it… He was certainly undeserving of such an ignoble end."

“You are so full of it!” Hugen musing pensively looked away; subsequently, he broke his long, uncharacteristic silence with a grunt.

Uyuk could see the other was tense, as though anticipating a fight, perhaps an onslaught (ambush), yet chose to disregard Hugen's unusually taut demeanor.

"As it is, his spirit will now be forced to roam the Earth forever.  I'm not sure just how much comfort our future sacrifices can bring him.  It's most unfortunate the way things turned out for him, eh…Too bad for us that he failed."  Uyuk disingenuously lamented, his mind on entirely different matters. “Oh, I know full well what you mean to do the moment we return home, but I won't let you; we won't let you.”  Uyuk inwardly scoffed as he concurrently (at the same time) determinedly clenched the fist he had hidden from Hugen's sight.  “He is my friend and he'd come through for me more than once.”

"Oh, but has he?  Has he really?"  Hugen's eventual, sarcastic response, had at first shocked Uyuk, but then he quickly got a grip on his senses as he realized Hugen was referring to General Kunsun.

Uyuk’s ambivalent (unsure) eyes again met Hugen's stone gaze.  After a moment's hesitation he tragically grimaced and nodded, "Yes, I suppose you are right.  After all, it strengthened Zakhertan Yozdek’s resolve to send an invading army to, purportedly reinforce Korion’s borders and to offset (counteract) the expected onslaught (attack) from Kontu.  A hundred-thousand strong, was it not?"  He waited for Hugen's silent confirmation of the figure before he continued, "Without that edge massive armies of Kontu would have been unleashed on Korion by now."

There was a quick exchange of glances, meaningful, wistful looks of excitement then both burst into boisterous, hearty laughter.

LEGEND OF NEVETSECNUAC - ON THE WAY TO THE CAPITAL - SECTION 13

LEGEND OF NEVETSECNUAC - ON THE WAY TO THE CAPITAL - SECTION 13

Zhadol had narrowed his eyes and had spoken thoughtfully that last part, but then he sharply looked up and grimaced, "Yet, you know what, Egil Viggoaries is not entirely to be blamed for all that he’d…. “Zadol abruptly stayed his tongue, then simply shook his head. “What I mean to say is that he’s only the product of his circumstances.  Zakhertan Yozdek’s former Chief Eunuch, Mokan had a lot to do with molding Egil Viggoaries’character; yes, since the time he’d been made his guardian, when Egil was in his early teens.  Now there was a devious, callous brute; his heart was black, far blacker than Egil Viggoaries's now. You are most fortunate that his early death spared you from having any dealings with him.”

01- CHIEF EUNUCH MOKAN

Zadol pensively looked away for a time, then after a nod, said: “Since the time Egil Viggoaries’s training was entrusted to that demon Chief Eunuch, furthermore, he was given free rein to do anything he pleased…. well, is it any wonder that Egil Viggoaries is the way he is now?  In a rare, vulnerable moment once, much to my surprise, Egil tearfully opened his heart to me and confessed his deepest, darkest secrets; how he had been savagely, brutally …. oh, I cannot speak of such….” Zhadol suddenly dropped his head and fell silent, as involuntary shudder just then passed through him.

"Then I should think that His Excellency Egil Viggoaries definitely had a hand in his guardian's untimely and rather suspicious demise (end).  After all, didn't he have everything to gain and nothing to lose?"  Yennic's pitiless (cold) tone was deliberately provocative.

"I see that you are not above lending an ear to these unsubstantiated, idle and malicious rumors that obviously persist to date." Zhadol huffed angrily.

"Mokan had a multitude of enemies and any one of them was capable of engineering that bizarre, freakish accident, infinitely more capable than a mere boy barely fourteen years of age.  Mokan got exactly what he deserved.  Frankly, it’s strange that someone didn't off that brute long before."   Zhadol gritted his teeth then, growing quiet, looked away.

“How fervently (vehemently) you rush to the defense of Egil Viggoaries, while inadvertently perhaps, exposing your searing contempt for your old benefactor, Mokan.” Yennic mused, studying Zhadol out of the corner of his eye.

“One would think that you shared Egil Viggoaries's pain at first hand, despite your prior claims.  Well, why not?  I should be cross with you for keeping the truth from me, and your denial has confirmed my suspicions.  Egil Viggoaries was only fourteen at the time, but you were nineteen and certainly felt protective of him.  You both were in on the conspiracy, weren't you?  Though perhaps I'll milk the confession and the details some other time from you.”

Assuming a gentler disposition now, Yennic on the outset conceded, smiling, "True enough, it’s too far-fetched to consider… mmm… true enough, such a deed would be way beyond any boy's capacity.  Still, Mokan's demise was very beneficial for His Excellency Egil Viggoaries.  Wasn't he chosen for some personal, private service to the Crown Prince Herleif, shortly afterwards?  A decidedly advantageous gain, wouldn't you say?"

02- PRINCE HERLEIF (1)

"You would think so, wouldn't you?" Zhadol scoffed.

"First of all, the appointment came much, much later and secondly, there, too, Egil Viggoaries suffered unspeakable abuse at the hands of Zakhertan Yozdek's once, favored son Herleif.”

“No, Yennic," Zhadol asserted grimly, "it was not an advantageous position.  In fact, it was quite the opposite.  The damage done by his humiliation and degradation was almost irreparable.  However, it was somewhat countered by the scant attention and due recognition he received from our Sovereign."

Zhadol shook his head. “Yes, I could tell you horror stories about that episode in Egil's life as well.  Still, while emotionally bound to His Highness, Egil to date credits all blame on his rebellious father: he’s been held solely responsible for all Egil’s suffered pain and abominations since the time of Egil’s abandonment at infancy.  In fact, so doggedly Egil loathes, to the very marrow of his bones, his biological father, that I think…" But then Zhadol suddenly falling silent, pensively looked away at some distant point.

When Yennic drew closer and appeared, about to speak, Zhadol, surmising the inquiry, shook his head and answered readily, "No, Yennic, I don't know the insurgent Lord’s name.  I don't even think Egil Viggoaries knows for certain. "

"Then again, maybe he does know it; but he feels far too shamed to…” Zhadol in afterthought shrugged then stroked his beard.

Subsequently, his brain flooded with a rush of memories Zhadol, nodded absentmindedly as he inwardly examined the scant clues he’d previously overlooked. "Yes, maybe he does know, that would explain so much!"

“Shamed…?”  It was such an odd choice of words, that, Yennic, meanwhile, had looked questioningly at Zhadol; but the Commander ‘s mind already drifted off to distant memories, mired in his own recollections, he simply ignored Yennic.

In the ensuing minutes Zhadol then had quietly reminisced about the infrequent moments of kindness he'd experienced with Egil Viggoaries and the knotted muscles of his face relaxed their hold fractionally.  With a softer expression he looked up and smiled, "You know, Yennic, he does have a vulnerable side to him, though you'd rarely see it for he never drops his guard, even when asleep."

03-EGIL VIGGORIES

"Listening to your accounts one could easily be misled, or worse, disarmed, by His Excellency Egil Viggoaries." Yennic laughed cynically. "You paint a picture of a victimized, vulnerable, oh so tragic being!  How can you speak kindly of him after all you've seen, after all the atrocities you've witnessed and after all your suffering at his hands?  Is abandonment, or a deprived childhood love, any excuse for all his sins (depravities) he’d committed, or was it just his evil innate nature surfacing to begin with?  I'd suspect you'd find something nice to say about even the most vicious beast as he stood above you, threatening to devour you whole."  Yennic grinned, shaking his head.

"I've always said that you are too soft hearted.”  “Or does it go deeper than that?  Could it simply be guilt? And so, despite it all, you view Egil as replacement for your long-lost little brother-one you’d failed to protect; Egil hence, filling that void of mentoring and protecting, as means for absolution?" Yennic conjectured (theorised), as he sternly (unsympathetically, hardheartedly) scrutinized Zhadol.

Just then however, Yennic’s eyes suddenly lit up and a sinister smile brushed his lips as if he recalled a new way to goad the Commander.  "Speaking of Egil Viggoaries's favorites, I just realized it’s been some time since we've heard about Heng Erling."

04-- HENG ERLING

Still perched on the tree branch, Nevetsecnuac momentarily tensed at hearing that familiar name.  So much had happened since that fatal encounter.  A cold shiver rippled through him as he instantly recalled Heng Erling's deception, the intense combat and finally, that shattering disclosure (revelation) that had irretrievably altered his future. (Detailed account of this is at- Book 6- The Assassins- Section 17)

"You didn't do something drastic to Heng Erling, did you?"  Yennic's teasing tone disclosed a slight hint of jealousy.

"I hate to disappoint you but no, I didn't.  He left some time ago on a secret mission and I did not care to ask His Excellency anything about it."  Shrugging his shoulders dispassionately, Zhadol looked away.

"Understandably", Yennic masked his cruelty to play at being sympathetic once more.

"Well, perhaps he'll have the good fortune to fall prey to some serious adversary and never darken your thoughts again.  Tell me, though; was there any truth to those rumors concerning Heng Erling and His Excellency?"

05--HENG ERLING

"You know it well!"   Zhadol fixed his cold gaze back on the Lieutenant.

"But I thought that they had despised each other all along?" Yennic needled.

"The animosity between them was real enough.  They were rivals since childhood.  Heng Erling had always been close to the Crown Prince Herleif and never missed a chance to entice Prince Herleif into torturing Egil Viggoaries for being different.  Yet you know how opposites attract.  Besides, I believe Heng's recent change of heart was instigated by his mother's ambition.  That artful, calculating enchantress (wiccan) Lady Lingrace controls him absolutely. She has high ambitions for him, you know, particularly since His Highness has now two remaining living sons and only one living illegitimate one that we know of. “

“Wasn’t Lady Lingrace a lady-in waiting, to Lady Elin?” Yennic pondered out loud. “That’s right, she had been attendant to Prince Qijerrik and Prince Herleif’s mother Lady Elin, during which, she had an affair with His R.H. Zakhertan Yozdek. Later still, her husband Gustav Erling was executed for treason; Heng’s elder siblings were promptly executed, but the younger Heng Erling was spared, and we all know the reason, why? Rumors had it, because he was His Majesty Zakhertan Yozdek’s illegitimate son. Lady Lingrace is considered old now, she has lost most of her attractiveness, but still is around and furthermore, maintains most of her power.”

06- LADY LINGRACE

“You would think so, wouldn’t you?  But I think that is not entirely true. Meanwhile, she must have noticed the balance of power shifting towards Egil Viggoaries lately and so pushed her son into aligning with the sure victor.” Zhadol pensively ejected.

"And she thinks that, when it comes to it, His Excellency Egil Viggoaries will politely step aside?"  Yennic could not hold back a laugh.

"You're dangling over the (razor’s) blade’s edge again!"   Zhadol knitted his brows in anger.  "I warned you about that kind of dangerous talk!"

"I was only hypothesizing; I meant nothing by it." Yennic retracted it at once, grinning sheepishly.  "His Excellency's devotion and loyalty to His Highness is above question.  Everyone knows that."

Zhadol elected not to dwell on it.  "Come now.  Patient and tactful you are not.  I know you've been burning with curiosity all night, so why haven't you asked me yet about the cause of the recent trouble between Egil Viggoaries and myself instead of talking about nearly everything else?"

"I figured you'd get around to it eventually."  Yennic shrugged his shoulders, feigning indifference.  "Besides, you'd assured me that there was nothing to worry about."

"Pretend all you want; I know you better."  Zhadol laughed in good humor.

"Well then, I'll tell you but don't expect any elaboration on it. “
